Have you ever wondered why you would want to study the English Language? You must have had that random thought that goes: I speak English, I can write English, what more is there to learn? Thousands of teachers across the country have certainly been asked this question more than once, and usually within the same day. NCC offers English Language courses, so we wanted to demonstrate the fascination you will have with the English language.
In our infographic, you will find that language is complex. It is true that as native speakers, we can form sentences and listen and respond. However, do we form sentences effectively? Do we really hear what is being said, including the implied meaning in the words and tone chosen?
First, there is the history of the English language. Shakespeare spent much of his writing career inventing the words and phrases we use today. If he couldn’t find something that suited, he just went ahead and made it up. He decided we should break the ice when meeting someone new; you would never have been on a wild goose chase without him, and if you have seen better days, you can thank Shakespeare too.
Chaucer player a part in the evolution of English Language too, though some of his offerings are little saucy in places.
Then, there is geography. English is spoken across the world but includes some subtle yet essential differences. Americans and Scots share a common language, though you would barely notice: the dialectal choices, the accent and the colloquialisms used in each country shape a clear understanding of identity. To understand how a person speaks and writes is to appreciate something of their values and personality.
If you want to get clever then without language you might never have thought. If you could go in a time machine and chat to Descartes, he would argue that without the power of thought you would not exist. Therefore, you should understand the English Language because without it you wouldn’t be here. Did we go too far?
