Course introduction

NCC has produced this course for the Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (RQF). You may well be setting out to work or are already working in school as a teaching assistant.

This course has been written for people who are working, or planning to work, in any type of educational setting, whether this is primary, middle, or secondary school.

You may find yourself referred to under the general title of 'teaching assistant' within your school, but you may also be called a classroom assistant, school assistant, individual support assistant, special needs assistant, or learning support assistant.

These different job titles have come into effect due to the different types of work which assistants are required to do within the classroom. These reflect the job roles which are now present in schools for learning support staff.

As you work towards this qualification, you will be developing your skills and expertise in a number of areas, and you will need to think about how the theory fits in with your experiences in the classroom. As you gain experience and expertise in your work with children and young people, you may also find it a useful reference.

The Level 3 Award is made up of a number of different units of assessment which sit within the RQF (Regulated Qualifications Framework).

When you complete a unit successfully, you will gain a certain number of credits. A credit is based on how long an average learner would take to complete a unit, and one credit is roughly equal to 10 hours of learning.

If you subsequently wanted to progress to the Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, the four units in this course count towards that qualification, so that you will not then be required to retake these particular units.

Required knowledge

No previous knowledge is necessary to study this programme.

Assessment

This course is knowledge based, and so does not require any hands on experience or work placement within a school.

There are four units requiring a range of responses, including descriptive answers.

You should start by familiarising yourself with the course, its content, and its requirements and consider how you will meet these.  You should also think how you will structure your time to enable you to complete it.

When working through a unit, you should first read through it fully, ignoring references to questions that you find in the text at this stage.  When you have done this, you should go back to the beginning of the unit once more, read through the text, and this time answer the referenced questions as you encounter them.

FAQs

What does NCC stand for?

NCC originally stood for the National Consortium of FE (Further Education) Colleges. This brought together the FE Colleges to achieve the best provision. Regular national meetings were attended by both Colleges and Government agencies who funded them. This was very helpful to them both to best deliver training to their students.

For more than 25 years NCC has supplied FE Colleges with learning materials as well as student marketing.

NCC now specialise in online training of a very high quality to students both self-funded, paid for by schools, employers and training providers.

“Currently doing my level 3 supporting teaching and learning certificate.”

I can’t recommend NCC enough. It’s definitely self paced, the more hours you put in the faster you’ll be done which I love. I love the tutor responses, very detailed and self explanatory. Ps they run a plagiarism check, so you do need to study properly which I love.

“Very happy and impressed!”

I have been very happy and impressed with the NCC home learning course. I have been dealing with Lucy O'Donoghue and Sally Swift, both have been very helpful, both respond very quickly to my e mails, whether that be confirming they've received my work, to supporting me in my course.
The coursework itself seemed a little repetitive at times, but apart from that would highly recommend, it has taught me a lot and has given me that vital first step in a career working within a school.
