Course introduction

This Sports Psychology Diploma focuses on the scientific study of people and their behaviours in sport contexts and the practical application of that knowledge.

Each module of this customised course contains associated revision exercises and activity questions which are designed to allow students to demonstrate their underpinning knowledge and show how this can be applied in various contexts. One important consideration when taking on a new course of study is to find out about exactly what the subject entails. As such the following extract is included in order for the reader to gain an impression of the type of work a sport and exercise psychologist undertakes:

'The application of psychology to sport and exercise settings is a relatively new field which is rapidly developing and expanding. This branch of psychology is concerned with understanding the behaviour, mental processes, and well-being of people who are involved in sport and exercise. Practitioners typically specialise in either the sport or exercise branches, though some work equally in both fields.'

Sport and exercise psychologists work with individuals, teams, and organisations in a wide range of contexts. Examples of their work include:

Helping elite performers to develop preparation strategies to deal with the demands of competition and training

Applying research into motor learning and psychophysiological processes to maximise practice and fitness regimes

Assisting coaches, managers, and referees with enhancing their interpersonal and communication skills

Counselling injured athletes during their rehabilitation

Advising youth sport performers travelling to international fixtures on how to deal with disappointment, homesickness, and family problems

Working with health promotion staff to increase exercise

Motivation and adherence in sedentary individuals

Facilitating an optimal 'motivational climate' for the clients of exercise instructors

Optimising the psychosocial benefits that cardiac rehabilitation patients can gain from their exercise involvement’ (bps website Division of Sport and Exercise).

What does NCC stand for?

NCC originally stood for the National Consortium of FE (Further Education) Colleges. This brought together the FE Colleges to achieve the best provision. Regular national meetings were attended by both Colleges and Government agencies who funded them. This was very helpful to them both to best deliver training to their students.

For more than 25 years NCC has supplied FE Colleges with learning materials as well as student marketing.

NCC now specialise in online training of a very high quality to students both self-funded, paid for by schools, employers and training providers.

“Already looking at my next course...”

I left school some 28 years ago and was considered by many to be an academic failure, I enrolled into a local university a couple of years ago and completed a Certificate in Education which have me the confidence to expand my learning. I adore sport and found the psychological aspects of teacher training answered many of the questions associated with my earlier academic failures. I looked at lots of different Sports Psychology courses but the content offered by NCC simulated my excitement and I couldn't wait to get started.

Home learning does require a degree of self discipline but my tutor, Amanda, was a constant source of inspiration and motivation. When I unexpectedly deployed with the military for four months my studies were place on hold and I re commenced upon my return. The pace of learning is fairly consistent, and I find myself eagerly waiting for my marked assignments to return. I am already looking at my next course which will certainly be with NCC.
